Profile & Account

Everything that's about you, not a specific journal — your name, photo, password, signed-in devices, and the journals you belong to as a follower.

What lives here

Profile is split into two columns on wide screens (and stacked on mobile):

  • Left column — your Profile (avatar, display name, bio), Account info, and Security & Sessions (password change + every device you're signed into).
  • Right columnJournals you belong to, the journals other people have invited you into. From here you toggle email alerts, hide journals you don't want cluttering your view, or leave them entirely.

What's NOT here

Settings for journals you own (members, photos, audiences, backups) live in Journal Admin, reachable from the 📓 Journals link in the header. This page is for personal preferences and the account itself.

Profile & photo

Your name, bio, and avatar — what other journal members see next to your contributions.

Display name

The name shown next to your stories, comments, and on the masthead when you're a journal owner. Type a new name and click Save; the change appears across the app on your next refresh.

Bio

A short description of yourself. Shows up in member lists when other journal owners hover over your avatar — useful when you're invited into a teacher's journal or a club journal where the owner doesn't already know you.

Profile photo

Click Upload / replace photo to pick a new image. After uploading, you'll get a cropping frame so you can choose exactly what shows — drag to reposition, pinch / scroll to zoom. Remove photo reverts to your initial-letter placeholder.

Photo tip

Avatars are rendered small (32–64px in most places). Use a clearly framed face shot — anything with fine detail will get lost. Square crops work best.

Sign Out

The Sign Out button in the Profile card top-right signs out this device only — your other devices stay signed in. To sign out a different device, see Active Sessions.

Security & sessions

Change your password and manage every device that's currently signed in to your account.

Changing your password

Enter your current password, then your new password twice (the second time is for catch-typo confirmation). Click Save. You stay signed in on this device after a successful change; other active sessions on other devices stay signed in too.

Forgot password

If you can't remember the current password, use Forgot password? on the sign-in screen. LifeWyns will email a reset link to the address on your account.

Active Sessions

Below the password section, the Active Sessions table lists every device or browser currently signed in as you. Each row shows:

  • Device label — a friendly name (e.g. "MacBook · Chrome" or "iPhone · Safari") inferred from the user-agent. The session you're on right now is marked This device.
  • Last seen — the most recent time we saw activity on that session.
  • Sign out — kicks that device. The next request from it gets a 401, and the user has to sign in again.
Suspicious session?

If you see a device you don't recognize, sign it out immediately and change your password. Most "unknown" devices turn out to be old phones, tablets, or browsers you forgot to close — but better safe.

Two-step email verification

When you sign in from a new device, LifeWyns emails you a one-time 6-digit code. Enter it to prove the account is yours. After successful verification, that device is "trusted" — future sign-ins from it skip the code. Each trusted device shows up in Active Sessions.

Journals you belong to

The right column lists every journal someone else has invited you into. From here you control your relationship with each one.

The cards

Each journal card shows:

  • Tile photo + journal name + optional tagline.
  • Owner — the journal's primary admin, with their avatar. Hover to see their bio.
  • Role pill — Admin, Co-Author, or Reader. Tells you what you can do in that journal.
  • Action buttons — Alert toggle, Options, Hide/Unhide, Remove.

The envelope alert toggle

The small ✉ icon on each card controls whether you get emails about new stories in that journal:

  • Solid envelope (accent color) — alerts are on. You'll receive an email when the journal author publishes or updates a story (and clicks Alert Audience). Click to turn off.
  • Greyed envelope with a red strike-through — alerts are off. The journal owner can publish freely; you won't be emailed. Click to turn on.

This is the same setting you can change inside the journal itself (Story Time → ☰ Menu → Options → "Email me on new stories"). Toggling either place updates the other.

Options

Click Options on a card to open the per-journal preferences modal. Today the only setting there is Email me on new stories — same as the envelope, just bigger and with a description. The modal is designed to grow as more notification types arrive.

Hide vs Remove

  • Hide — tucks the journal out of your visible list without leaving it. You stay a member; the owner still sees you in their member list. Use this for journals you've drifted away from but might come back to. Hidden journals don't disappear forever — a "Show N hidden journals" link appears at the bottom of the list when there's anything hidden.
  • Remove — leaves the journal entirely. Your journal_members row is deleted; you no longer have access. The owner has to re-invite you to come back. Treat this as the bigger commitment.

Empty state

If the right column shows "You are not a member of any journals yet," that just means nobody's invited you yet. Once a journal owner adds you, the card appears here on your next refresh.

Want your own journal?

If you don't have any journals you own, a "Start your own journal" card sits at the top of the left column. Click it to land in Journal Admin, where you can spin up a new one in about a minute.
